The War Song
Cicadas scream in the summer heat
Melody to the war drum’s beat;
Grey on grey the summer sky
Storm heads gather near –
Do you hear?
Anvils, forges, flames on high
Pockmarking field and sky;
Red on blue the shades of War
Colour all that be –
Do you see?
Thrum of harp and beat of drum
War songs sung in noonday sun;
Baseline is the pulse of blood
The notes surround the fear –
Do you hear?
Pavilions, tents, dots of light
Heralds of the coming fight;
Thunder building in the air
And lightning bolting free –
Do you see?
Stamp of feet and shout of men
Fighting in the fields and fen;
Clash of sword and armour strong
And one triumphant cheer –
Do you hear?
When all is said and all is done
Songs of war will still be sung;
With all of Nature hovering still
To hear the war song’s cry –
As the storm breaks in the sky.
(July, 1989?)
