Arminius (The Mercenary's) Song
(To the Tune of “Take It From Day to Day” by Stan Rogers)

Well, it’s not the hours of March or Watch
And it’s not the work that I mind so much
Or the long cold miles from my lover’s touch
‘Though for sure she’s far away.
No stranger, I, to the touch of steel
Or the honest fear any man might feel
But I long for dust under my heel
And a pocket full of pay.
So I’ll take it from day to day.

The men about me gripe and moan;
And my rusty armour creaks and groans.
The morning fog is in my bones,
And the ache won’t go away.
At home I bet it’s warm and fair.
I still feel her fingers’ in my hair,

But a noose awaits if I leave for there
So I guess I’ll have to stay,
And just take it from day to day.

We’re as far south now as I want to come,
But Berus’ has me under his thumb,
And I signed up for the whole damn run,
I can’t get off half way.
But when this war is o’er you’ll see,
I’ll go back home, no more wandr’in for me
For there’s someone I long to see,
She’ll help me spend my pay
So I’ll take it from day to day.

(repeat verse)

No stranger, I, to the touch of steel
Or the honest fear any man might feel
But I long for dust under my heel
And a pocket full of pay.
So I’ll take it from day to day.
