For
Mahault and Berend van der Eych, on the Occasion of their Authorzations
July 12,
2002
Cruel fate that took me from the field that day
The right to bear witness to thy triumphs
Stolen, Lost
For reasons that bore false fruit
Yet thy deeds to me described by jubilant iron brethren
And my faith and love did put me there
In the glinting flash of metal
In the wooden crack of shields
In the noble hearts of my friends
I watched without seeing
Was there without being
Joy and sorrow one
For what this day was done
That I alone did not chance to see
Did not chance to be as you had been for me
But my heart sings with your hearts
My sword longs to strike as your swords strike
My shield to stand between you, beside you
Our bond as fighters binds us together
Our bond as friends binds us forever
My brother and my sister
